James Packard is delighted to have spent 40 years as a member of the entertainment industry in educational and professional and corporate theater settings. His junior year of college he learned the delights of theater for young audiences as a performer. With his BA (1978) in directing and communication arts from Westmar College (Le Mars IA), he began working with youth encouraging them to use creative drama to explore their world. He attended Villanova University (Villanova PA) to work on a MA in Theater and then transferred to the University of Iowa (Iowa City IA) for his MFA in Theater (1983). While at Iowa, because of the Playwright's Workshop Jim found working on original productions gave him an eye for new works and freedom in the creation of theater works. He has worked as production manager, director, technical director and designer of scenery, lighting, sound and video on 500 plus productions. From 1983 to 2001 he also worked as theater educator in universities from Florida to New York. Starting in 2001 he began working for the Long Island Children's Museum and the operation of its theater. He brings his creative passion, eye for original works, to the programming of live performing arts for children and families. The LICM Theater is year-round venue with more than 200 professional performances annually. LICM presents many local, regional, national and international companies performing innovative shows and workshops for families and youth. He has presented performances on the LICM stage from the United States, Mexico, Canada, Spain, Australia, Bulgaria, Afghanistan, South Africa, China, Russia, Czech Republic, England, Vietnam, Scotland and India. He has worked directly to develop new works with artists. He has been attending showcase for 10 years and been on IPAY Selection Committee from 2012 and is currently the Vice Chair. James delights in his work at LICM because the opportunities to create unique and original programming which can be presented to family and children's audiences while providing a safe way to explore our world for children and their families.
